Local media face an increasing challenge of reaching their readers effectively. Our observations indicate that the dynamic development of large retail chains decreased the number of smaller businesses that have traditionally distributed local newspapers. Local newspapers face the danger of disappearing entirely. That, in turn, brings about many negative effects, since local media plays an important part in supporting democratic values and keeping local governments accountable. The only way to retain the crucial role played by the local media within their communities is the development and digital transformation of the local news portals. These institutions need help in every aspect of the process: technological, economic, and building out of competencies. We have created an app that will be open to all the project participants, or at least 20 local news portals. The app will encourage and make it easier for local communities to use their news portals every day. Simultaneously, it is supposed to be a tool used for building out a community around a specific news outlet. The implementation of the app will support two-way communication between the readers and the editorial staff and should encourage more frequent visits to the local news portal and its increased role in public debate. Using the appropriate tools, we will collect and organize data that will help us reach readers and meet their expectations more effectively. We will build communities of readers focused around their respective 25 local news outlets that will support values shared by the editorial teams. Each newsroom will select an individual responsible for creating and maintaining the portal’s online community. We will provide training for those individuals. We will also create a “Common Content Magazine,” or space for the co-sharing of news content between participating newsrooms, enabling communication between recipients of different local news.
