Our research indicates that the knowledge of cultural heritage among citizens of the village of Pelnik (Warmińsko-Mazurskie Voivodeship) is vanishing. Newcomers to our community don’t know the local traditions, while historic monuments in Pelnik are in disarray. Less than half of surveyed individuals was able to answer whether Pelnik is in Warmia or Mazury.
Facing that challenge, we engaged 30 citizens from the village to expand their knowledge of Pelnik’s history and cultural heritage. We have created inter-generational groups that were included in initiatives aimed at promoting local traditions. The groups collected old photographs of Pelnik, conducted interviews with the oldest residents, took part in a research walk, and prepared informational content for informational plaques about the most important sites in the village. With the help of these groups we have restored small village chapel and have added a history corner to the structure, revitalized local cemetery, and produced a puppet show about our local legend. To complete the project, we have organized a picnic for citizens of Pelnik with a fashion show displaying traditional folk garments from Warmia and Mazury.
Our partner – Łukta municipality – was also engaged in our initiatives. Łukta’s authorities helped with informational plaques and granted us access to the chapel and cemetery.
Our evaluation surveys and conversations with group animators revealed that the participants now know their community better, including its history and cultural heritage. We have also witnessed how collaboration has deepened the bonds between the citizens of Pelnik.
